How PA Turnpike tolls work
Tolls rise every January under Act 44 of 2007, the law that has the Turnpike help fund transportation across Pennsylvania; the 2026 increase was 4 percent. On the mainline and the Northeast Extension a car pays $1.13 for each tolled segment it drives plus $0.073 a mile with E-ZPass, rounded up to the cent.
East of Reading and on the Northeast Extension, Open Road Tolling has charged drivers under overhead gantries at highway speed, without slowing down, since January 5, 2025; west of Reading it starts in January 2027, and until then the toll is still charged from interchange to interchange. Without E-ZPass, a camera reads the plate and the Turnpike mails an invoice: that is Toll By Plate, and it costs about twice as much.
