The closures, as the agencies post them

Why these roads close

They climb above where crews can keep winter roads open: snow buries them for months and avalanches cross them. Each fall the park or the state DOT closes the gates once the snow comes, and reopens them in late spring or summer after plowing, on dates set from that year's snow. The passes that stay open through winter, such as Donner and Snoqualmie, are on mountain passes, with their chain controls; closures from snow and ice on other roads are on snow and ice road closures.

Questions

When does Tioga Pass close?
When snow makes it impassable, usually in the fall; the National Park Service and Caltrans set the date each year from the conditions, and reopen it in late spring or summer once it is plowed. This page shows the closure as soon as the feeds report it.
Is Going-to-the-Sun Road open?
The full road over Logan Pass is open only in summer. The status above is the National Park Service's current alert for Glacier National Park.
Does "no closure reported" mean the road is open?
Not always. It means none of the feeds we read reports a closure right now. Parks also close roads at night or in storms without a feed entry, so check the official page linked on each road before you go.
